Sew-A-Long: Midget Block 11- Signal

The Signal block is machine pieced with small scraps of left-over fabric. The blue fabric is probably my favorite of the bunch.

Each block will be 4" completed... the first 50 block instructions can be purchased from Sentimental Stitches but instructions for blocks 51 through 196 are free. Check them out HERE!

If you're sewing along I'd love to see your completed blocks in the Flickr Group! :)

Sew-A-Long: Midget Block 10- Log Cabin

This little log cabin block was paper pieced. Each section is very small and anything but paper piecing would have been much more difficult. I chose some scraps of fabric that I had left over from other projects and the final product is what you see above!

Each block will be 4" completed... the first 50 block instructions can be purchased from Sentimental Stitches but instructions for blocks 51 through 196 are free. Check them out HERE!

Sew-A-Long: Midget Block 9- Cactus Bloom

This block was hand appliqued. I used some of my hand dyed fabric for the red buds and a green polka dot for the leaves. Because it's such a small block it didn't take much time to complete. :)

Sew-A-Long: Midget Block 8: Tricolor Block

This block turned out really nicely. The color combination is one of my favorites.

To make sewing quick and easy I cut 3 long strips, 1 of each color, and stitched them together, long edges together. After that I cut the stripes in the 4 blocks, turned them in the correct direction, and stitched them up.

The best part about making just 1 block is how fast it can be. This particular block, especially, was done in under half an hour. Now I can add it to my Midget Block collection and make some more!

Sew-A-Long: Midget Block 7: Railroad Crossing

The Railroad Crossing block was a nice break from all the paper-piecing I did on the last 2 blocks. The central X was sewn in strips and then cut to the correct size and then everything was sewn together on the diagonal. For this block I chose a red and white stripe and a printed blue fabric that almost looks hand-dyed but isn't. I'm glad for the simple design of this one but it's not really one of my favorites. Maybe I would like it better if I'd chosen different fabrics but I'm too lazy to re-do it. ;)

Sew-A-Long: Midget Block 6: Palm

The palm block wasn't nearly as intense to make as the pineapple block but there were still some really small pieces. It's paper-pieced which makes it a little easier to work with though. For this block I chose a hand dyed green fabric for the palm leaves and a blue quilting cotton for the background. I think it turned out pretty good!

Sew-A-Long: Midget Block 5: Pineapple

Wow, this block was intense! There were lots of tiny pieces but thankfully it was all paper-pieced. For the pineapple I chose a yellow quilting mix and one of my hand dyed fabrics in a redish-pink colorway. It all really pops and despite the hard work I really enjoyed making this one. :)

Sew-Along: Midget Block 4: Double X or Ladies Art Company

This block was super easy and quick. I chose some bright colors with bold prints for this one and it turned out great! I can't wait to make the next one. :)

Sew-Along: Midget Block 3: Wild Goose Chase

Block 3 has lots of little pieces... good thing it's paper pieced! The Wild Goose Chase block took some time but the results are really great. The black and red fabric make a striking contrast and the whole thing just pops right out at you. I'll trim up the edges later but this block is 4.5" square.

Sew-Along: Midget Block 2: Indian Star aka Kansas City Star

I've completed my second Midget Block this past week. I'm loving how quick and easy each block is! This block is the Indian Star or the Kansas City Star. I prefer the second name since I'm a KC native. ;)

I chose a white print on white for the background, an orange floral for the star points and a blue batik for the rest. All of my fabrics are from my scrap bins. This project is really great in that I can use up my scraps and don't have to buy anything.

Sew-Along: Midget Block 1: Ohio Star

I recently came across a beautiful Depression Era sampler quilt as I was researching quilt ideas to use up all my scraps. I love making scrappy quilts and I hate tossing out fabric from the projects I've completed. Needless to say, I have tons of scraps! :)

Sentimental Stitches has a sample quilt series called Midget Blocks that reproduces the Depression Era quilt. Each block measures 4" square once completed and there are 196 of these little blocks.

I know, I don't need another project, but I fell in love with it and couldn't pass it up!

The first 50 blocks you'll need to purchase. And at $22 (that's .44 cents each) I couldn't resist. The instructions are well worth it, along with modern updates to the patterns such as paper piecing. The rest of the blocks are free!

Here's the first of my blocks, completed. This one is titled 'Ohio Star'. It's been updated to a paper pieced block that goes together super fast! I chose a minty green for the star and a shiny pink dot on pink for the background. I did my best to line up those little circles, maybe I should have chosen an all-over pink pattern instead. Oh well, it still works for me! I'm not too big of a perfectionist. ;)
