Striped Socks

Learning to dye my own yarn has been a lot of fun! Making self-striped yarn was easier then I thought. My first test I used the primary colors: red, yellow, and blue. The next time I make striped yarn, I'll be sure to photograph it so I can make a tutorial.

I do have a few hand dyed striped yarns available in my shop Color to Dye For!

My go-to sock knitting pattern is David's Toe Up Sock Cookbook from Ravelry. It's one of the easiest patterns to follow that I've found so far. These socks are considered 'plain vanilla' aka basic knit with no pattern design. You can make fancy lace-y socks with this pattern as long as you make a gauge. Yes, I said the G-word! Anyways, this striped yarn didn't look that great with anything but a knit stitch.

I hope to make more fun yarn and socks as time allows!

Mint and Chocolate Chip Shawl

I've never designed any knitting patterns before. I've always found plenty of inspiration on Ravelry. But I recently made that leap and tried my hand at making up something for myself. It was a challenge, to say the least, that I doubt I'll repeat any time soon. :) The finished garment turned out beautifully and is just like my favorite ice-cream inspired treat.

Testing the pattern
I came across mosaic knitting while working on another shawl. I liked the idea and knitted up a test swatch so I could determine how many repeats I wanted.

Finished knitting the border
The completed bottom border with all the diamond repeats has a nice weighted/drapey feel to it. The mosaic knitting was really enjoyable!

Working on the shawl
Knitting the last of the striped repeats on the shawl seemed to take forever. As soon as it was done I wove in the ends, washed and blocked it, and called it done!

I took notes on my progress but I doubt I can make heads or tails of them now and I'm not going to become the next amazing knitting designer. I'm happy to make my own stuff and keep it at that.

Thanks for stopping by!

Zirkus Shawl

Pattern: Zirkus by Lisa Hannes
Needles: 4.50mm & 5.00 mm
Yarn: from Knitcrate and is no longer available

  • Cashmere Dreams Sock Yarn- Big Bang Theory (colored)
  • Cashmere Dreams Sock Yarn- Alta (gray)

Cast on: 6/1/16
Completed: 7/20/16

This shawl worked up pretty quickly! If I hadn't had other work projects and kids at home during the summer I probably would have gotten it done faster.

This was my first mosaic knitting experience and had a lot of fun with it. I bought the yarn as a kit from Knitcrate and the pattern came from Ravelry. The yarn colorways have been discontinued but any sock yarn will work for this pattern. I like the gray but I should have changed the other color to something that popped more. Live and learn! Either way it's a great shawl. 😊

WIP: Hexipuffs

Over the summer I fell in to the hexi puff crazy. It's addicting. It's nice to be able to make one in a short amount of time and toss it in my box. I'll connect them all together once I get a little more.

You can find the instructions on Ravelry, here. If you're a knitter like me, you gotta try one...

The Wonderful Wallaby Sweater

My younger son requested something hand made for himself. I'd been knitting up tons of things for myself and he loves whatever I make. I was happy to oblige, of course! I wasn't about to pass up whatever my 6 year old is interested in plus it's the perfect time of year to make something warm!

I'd been wanting to make a sweater and found a pattern that I really wanted to try, The Wonderful Wallaby Sweater. He was so excited to see the progress as it grew off my needles. He's in love with the pocket (for his treasures, he says) and the hood.

He also requested a green sweater so we sat down at the computer and picked out the perfect dye color. He announced that it was 'perfect!' I dyed up 3 skeins in a semi-sold style for this project. I'm not a very fast knitter but this project went quickly and I love the results! :)

A Birthday Scarf

My younger son has been very interested in knitting lately so for his 6th birthday I knitted him up a simple scarf. He's in love with it. :) I actually let him pick out the yarn at the store and he watched the progress as it grew off my needles. He was thrilled to open the package and see the completed scarf. He wears it all the time and announces that his 'mommy made it!' whenever asked. <3

Pattern: Dapperly Dashing Scarf (from Ravelry)

Yarn: I Love This Yarn! Metallic in Jellybean colorway (from Hobby Lobby)

Peacock Caplet

This past summer, I began experimenting with dying yarn. For this yarn I combined several different blues and a deep purple to create the peacock colorway.
It turned out really well!

I really wanted to make something with the peacock yarn that I could wear in the fall to my college classes. I found a pretty simple caplet that knit up quickly. You can find the Traveler's Cape on Ravelry. I did add the extra cable down the center back to mimic the front cables but otherwise the pattern is the same. I completed it just in time in late summer to wear once it started cooling down.

I have plenty more one of a kind yarns for sale in my shop: Color to Dye For!

Berry Crush Knitted Socks

Knitted socks are one of my favorite things to make. I learned to knit just so I could make my own socks. I have small feet and many of the store bought socks are too big and floppy. Besides, there are so many more color options with knitting my own socks!

For these socks I used a plain stockinette stitch. This type of sock is usually just called a 'plain vanilla' sock. It's a no-fuss knit sock.

I used the David's Toe-Up Sock Cookbook pattern, which I found on Ravelry. This has been the best basic sock pattern I've found so far.

For the yarn I used my own hand dyed skein. I called the color-way 'Berry Crush". The colors range from red to pink to deep purple and everything in between.

I have lots of hand dyed yarn for sale too, if you want to grab some! I have everything from sock yarns all the way up to bulky weight yarns.

Color to Dye For- One of A Kind Hand Dyed Yarns

I've always loved hand dyed yarns and I'm the kind of person who wants to try everything crafty related. I've hand dyed fabric in the past and thought yarn couldn't be much different. After researching, gathering tools and supplies, I had a go at it! I fell in love and went a little crazy dying as much yarn as possible. Now I have tons of hand dyed yarn for myself and plenty to share with you!

Color to Dye For is now open for business!

There are sock yarns, DK weight yarns, worsted weight yarns, and bulky yarns available. Almost everything is one of a kind (OOAK) in lots of fun color ways. Check them out and grab a skein for yourself or as a gift before they're all gone!
