Sew-A-Long: Midget Block 7: Railroad Crossing

The Railroad Crossing block was a nice break from all the paper-piecing I did on the last 2 blocks. The central X was sewn in strips and then cut to the correct size and then everything was sewn together on the diagonal. For this block I chose a red and white stripe and a printed blue fabric that almost looks hand-dyed but isn't. I'm glad for the simple design of this one but it's not really one of my favorites. Maybe I would like it better if I'd chosen different fabrics but I'm too lazy to re-do it. ;)

Each block will be 4" completed... the first 50 block instructions can be purchased from Sentimental Stitches but instructions for blocks 51 through 196 are free. Check them out HERE!

If you're sewing along I'd love to see your completed blocks in the Flickr Group! :)

Sew-A-Long: Midget Block 6: Palm

The palm block wasn't nearly as intense to make as the pineapple block but there were still some really small pieces. It's paper-pieced which makes it a little easier to work with though. For this block I chose a hand dyed green fabric for the palm leaves and a blue quilting cotton for the background. I think it turned out pretty good!

Boys' Custom Diaper Set

These boy diaper sets were completed for a customer. One features Tonka trucks and the other has airplanes all over. This is a great example of what can be created when working with what a customer wants! It's only limited by your imagination! :)

Sew-A-Long: Midget Block 5: Pineapple

Wow, this block was intense! There were lots of tiny pieces but thankfully it was all paper-pieced. For the pineapple I chose a yellow quilting mix and one of my hand dyed fabrics in a redish-pink colorway. It all really pops and despite the hard work I really enjoyed making this one. :)

Mermaid Custom Baby Set

This custom baby set was really fun to make! I used the new Riley Blake Saltwater fabric line to work these up. The mermaids, narwhals, and seahorses are an absolute favorite of mine!

The customer requested an even smaller diaper cover then I have listed in my shops. The newborn size fits a baby 4-9 pounds but she needed something even smaller! I shrank my diaper cover pattern for a preemie size and added an umbilical cord snap down in the center. These are super tiny and super cute!

I also made a portable changing pad and 2 large wetbags. The changing pad feels almost like a quilt with the batting inside and rolls up nicely for travel.

Everything turned out really well and I'm really tempted to buy a bunch more of this fabric. <3

Hand Knit Owl Mittens, Part 1

I've been teaching myself to knit for a couple of years now. I've made all the obligatory dishtowels, have learned to make socks, and work on circular needles. I needed a new challenge! These hand knit owl mittens were just the thing. :)

For this project I learned to use DPNs (doube point needles). I bought these beautiful needles from KnitPicks, HERE. They're actually easier to use then I imagined and I'm glad I invested in them.

I also learned to do colorwork. I've admired this technique for a long time and just needed the right project to start. The pattern is called Owl Mittens and is designed by Spilly Jane. You can find the pattern for sale on Ravelry, HERE

The yarns I'm using are Capretta's Turmeric and Wine fingering weight. You can find them, HERE.

I'm a slow knitter so I only have 1 mitten partially finished. I figured that if I started working on them this spring that I should have them done by this fall! Well, that's the hope. :)

My Most Popular Blog Post!

Way back in 2010, when I started slowly getting more involved in custom designing and pattern work, I wrote a short piece on the history of clothing and the development of pattern making. It's still my most popular piece! Follow the link to read it for yourself. Enjoy! :)

One of a Kind: Custom Patchwork Girls' Dress

This one of a kind patchwork dress was created for a friend's daughter for some summer fun! The criss-crossed straps and elastic backing ensure a proper fit and the twirly patchwork skirt is full of color and fun. The large hand-stitched flower is attached at the waistline- but wait! I put a snap on the backside of the flower for easy removal. Take it off to so the dress can be machine washed or even wear the dress without it.

This dress was lots of fun to make and I hope to make some more similar (but not exactly like it) patchwork dresses in the near future. :)

Dust Glove Review!

This months featured product is the Dust Glove! I had a wonderful review written about the glove and wanted to share it with you all! Do you own a dust glove too? I'd love to hear about it and what you use it on the most!

Hi my name is Marsha and I clean for a living.  Why is that important?  It is important because I have some experience with cleaning products.  What they need to be to work the best and how best to get the most effective use of them.  It’s also important because working for myself means, I do everything I can to cut cost where I can, without shorting the customer.  Sometimes I get really lucky and run across a gem of a business owner such as Heather.  She provides reusable products that are reasonable priced and high quality. Not only are her products reusable, which in itself is a cost saving factor, they are designed to be effective and long lasting.  Anything that she sells that I can use I don’t hesitate to purchase.  Heather takes pride in the work she does and that shines through in the products themselves.

One of my favorite products is her dust glove.  It not only does a fantastic job picking up the dust but leaves a very nice shine behind.  It is one of the only products I have ever used on a very dusty surface that has completely removed the dust without a lot of soap and water.  When I use the dust glove on a detail job I like to put a touch of Pledge Multi-Surface cleaner on the glove and leave a nice polish behind.  The glove is perfect to use with any kind of dusting job.  Whether it be a detail job or blinds it works incredibly well.

Its wonderful to be able to support a local business woman and going “green” at the same time. Heather's products are high quality hand crafted items at an affordable price and I love that I can easily order them from Amazon.
